What are concessions and accommodations

Concessions and accommodations are provided to support learners who experience barriers to learning, ensuring that they can participate fully in teaching, learning, and assessment. These measures are implemented in line with the South African Department of Basic Education (DBE) policies and inclusive education frameworks.

Concessions refer to approved adjustments in assessment or academic requirements granted to learners with specific needs or challenges. Examples of concessions include: Extra Time, Separate Venues, Rest Breaks, the use of a reader, scribe or computer, language and spelling concessions as well as adjusted assessment tasks and formats (font sizes and colour).

Accommodations are reasonable adjustments made in the learning environment to reduce barriers and support learners’ participation and progress. These include changes to the curriculum such as differentiated teaching methods and learning materials, modified classroom seating or environment, additional academic support or remedial programmes, assistive technology or learning aids, flexible teaching and assessment processes and individual support plans.
